After a teaser announcement back in April 2021, publisher Perfect World Games and developer Black Wings Game Studio have officially announced Persona 5: The Phantom X for iOS and Android. A release date was not announced, but it will be a free-to-play title with item-based in-app purchases.
Registrations for the “Infiltration Test” playtest are available now on the official website, and the actual playtest will begin on March 29th in China. Although the announcement itself does not mention a PC version, the playtest will be held on PC and Android devices.
Persona 5: Phanotm X is a brand new title based on the world of Personas 5 and takes place in Tokyo, and follows an original story around a new group of phantom thieves. The style and basic gameplay of the original game has been retained, while the graphics have been polished and the user experience and presentation optimized for smartphone users.
SEGA and ATLUS’ P-Studio will oversee development and provide resources, while Perfect World Games and Black Wings Game Studio will develop, distribute and operate the title. While it is based on the world of Personas 5, it is being developed as a new game tailored to local user preferences, trends and gameplay environments. The main character and his Persona were designed by ATLUS art team’s Shigenori Soejima.
The game is focused on the theme of “desire” and tells the story of students who have awakened to their “Personas” who face hardships together in an era of “low desire”. A mysterious old man with a long nose, a strange underwater space, an owl that can speak human language, and another world separated from reality – these seemingly independent things are all somehow connected.
Players will assume the role of a student, attend classes during the day and participate in activities such as baseball or watching movies with friends in their free time. After school, they can infiltrate the other world, which appears in the form of palaces with different themes, and use their Personas to engage in high-octane battles against enemies.
