LIHEAP energy assistance enrollment opening today for some

Those in need of energy bill assistance can apply beginning Jan. 9, with some residents able to apply starting today.

For those in need of energy assistance, the winter LIHEAP program is beginning to take applications very soon. For residents in Crawford and Sebastian counties, applications will be accepted beginning Tuesday, Jan. 3. For the rest of the 40/29 viewing area, applications will be accepted beginning Monday, Jan. 9. The program differs from the summer program, as it helps with not only electricity but propane, natural gas and even wood. If your application is accepted, you can get assistance for your energy needs, but there are some changes from last year. As pandemic funds whittle away, the increased assistance the LIHEAP program had available will be scaled back. Last year, LIHEAP gave out a maximum of nearly $400 a month to most residents, but it will be limited this year, with only about $240 a month maximum for energy assistance. Officials say to apply soon as the applications are on a first-come , first-served basis, and once the funding runs out, applications will be closed.
