Phillips, Keita and six players who could leave Liverpool in the January transfer window

Liverpool have done pretty well moving on fringe players in recent years, raising money through the sales of players such as Neco Williams, Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Phillips, though, has been retained, partly out of necessity and partly because the Reds have been unable to find a club willing to pay their asking price.

At 25, the centre-back is surely ready to go and play regular football, and although he is adored by Jurgen Klopp, his staff and his team-mates, there is an acceptance within Liverpool that he is worth more than being merely a fifth – choice option.

Whether he moves on this month will depend on what kind of offers materialise. He is valued at £10m ($12m) and has had interest from the likes of Bournemouth and Fulham in the past.

A loan move, with an option to buy, is the most likely outcome.
