The Razzies acknowledged the elephant in the room at the 2023 awards ceremony — the organization embarrassed itself after naming a 12-year-old girl worst actress, sparking controversy online.
Ahead of Sunday’s Academy Awards, which celebrate the year’s greatest achievements in film, the 43rd annual Razzies celebrated the “worst” Actors and Movies.
This year’s Razzie nominations were mired in controversy in January over the awards body’s nomination of 12-year-old actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong from the movie Firestarter. After an internet outcry, the Razzies apologized, removed Armstrong from the ballot and set an 18-year age limit for future nominees. The Razzies put themselves on the ballot to replace Armstrong and won by a landslide. In the award video, “Razz Berry” said “Until our next mistake, cheers!” accepting the shame.
“Blonde” took the biggest shame, as he took home the worst picture and the worst script. “Elvis” also took home two Razzies for worst supporting actor for Tom Hanks and “Tom Hanks and His Latex-Laden Face (and That Ludicrous Accent)” for worst screen combination. With Hanks’ Razzie, he joins a list of people who have won both a Razzie and an Oscar, including Eddie Redmayne, Halle Berry, Jared Leto and Nicole Kidman.
“Morbius” also won two awards for worst actor Adria Arjona and worst actor Leto, his second Razzie win.
“Disney’s Pinocchio,” not to be confused with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” earned worst remake, and Oscar-nominated actor Colin Farrell won a Razzie Redeemer for his work in “The Banshees of Inisher” after being nominated for worst to the movie. actor in 2005 in the movie “Alexander the Great”.
The Razzies continued the virtual format after COVID and announced the winners with a video lasting just under five minutes. The Golden Raspberry Foundation was founded by industry leaders John JB Wilson and Mo Murphy to recognize the year’s “worst films,” and the first in-person ceremony was held in 1981. A voter must pay a membership fee to vote at the Razzies, although there is no requirement to watch specific films.
