Harnessing the energy of moving water, Zheng Lu’s metal sculptures seem frozen in time. The Beijing-based artist challenges utilitarian or industrial associations with steel, creating a tension between the material and fluid forms. Defying our expectations and understanding of physics, the smooth, chrome surfaces reflect the surroundings and change light as the viewer moves around them, further adding to the perception that the sculpture itself is in motion. In some works, Zheng composes surfaces of thousands of Chinese characters derived from historical texts and poems, nodding to early Chinese philosophers who studied the physical principles of the natural world to better understand cosmological mysteries.

Zheng’s exhibition Liquid stories runs from March 16-29 at London’s HOFA Gallery, marking the artist’s first exhibition in the UK, and you can find more of his work on his website.
