Time magazine unveiled its list of the greatest places in the world, and only one Australian city did. No, not Sydney. Not even Melbourne. One of the greatest cities in the world, nestled right here in Australia, is… Brisbane.
That’s right, next to iconic places like Barcelona, Kyoto, Budapest, Vienna and the Pyramids of Giza appears our humble Brissy – or as it will be known from now on, Brisvegas.
The article in question praised the state for its “ambitious infrastructural advances”, its “artistic boutiques and cafes” and its “culinary epicenter”, and essentially told a whole spiel about urban development and the global audience that seemed so technical and boring to me that it brought Brisvegas back to Brisbane.
Like, how does Time great food, a bustling arts center, glorious sunny weather, and water views so dull my eyes water?
Well, at least the mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner loved it.
He gushed on ABC Radio Brisbane about the cheeky mention, which is a huge flex for the rest of us Sydney and Melbourne plebs.
“There was a little rumor going around about it and a bit of excitement, but I hadn’t heard exactly what it was until it was confirmed last night,” he said. .
“It’s really exciting – Time magazinee has 20 million subscribers worldwide.
“It’s obviously a global publication, and it’s just one of those things that helps elevate Brisbane from a tourism point of view.”
However, there is one thing he didn’t like Time‘ Spotlight: Apparently the photo he used of Brissy was ‘outdated’. TEA.
“My only disappointment is that the photo they chose was about five years out of date,” he said.
I was gonna make a mean joke about it being perfect for Brissy, but you know what? Jealousy is not a cute color on me. So let’s continue, Brisvegas.
“They must have selected a stock photo from a long time ago, but the good news is that we have a whole range of fresh images that we receive from around the world,” he continued.
“We’ll make sure to send them the new one.”
Honestly, there are worse problems to be had. Like a rental crisis.
The only other Australian location (which obviously wasn’t a city) that was mentioned was Kangaroo Island, due to its array of cool animals and plants.
Honestly, getting two top 50 spots has to be a flex, right?
